From Graffiti Writer to International Mural Artist

Akacorleone, the alter ego of Pedro Campiche, is a Portuguese-Swiss visual artist born in Lisbon in 1985. He began his creative journey in the city’s graffiti scene, developing his unique style on the streets before transitioning to galleries and public art projects. Fueled by a passion for drawing and visual culture, he earned a degree in Design and Visual Communication. After a stint as a graphic designer, he fully committed to his artistic practice, easily moving between illustration, murals, installations, and studio work.

Today, Akacorleone is known as a multidisciplinary artist, aptly described in his Instagram bio as “from Lisbon to the world,” reflecting his widespread presence across Europe.

A Signature Language of Color, Shape, and Symbolism

What distinguishes Akacorleone’s murals is their bold use of saturated colors and dynamic composition. His visual language merges graphic design, comic-book aesthetics, typography, and abstract forms into layered scenes. Faces, hands, symbols, and fragments of architecture overlap in vibrant tones of yellow, blue, pink, and red, creating a visual overload that mirrors contemporary life—fast, noisy, and full of competing messages. Critics often note how this “calderone” of figures and signs reflects modern society’s excess of information and our ongoing quest for satisfaction. However, despite the chaos, he carefully structures his compositions. His design background shines through in the balanced shapes, rhythmic flow, and thoughtful use of positive and negative space. Each mural reads like an eye-catching urban poster.

Murals from Lisbon to the World

Rooted in Lisbon’s visual landscape, Akacorleone’s work travels far beyond. In his hometown, he has created notable murals and public works, from large façades to projects for local festivals. One standout piece is BALANCE, a transformed basketball court in Campo dos Mártires da Pátria. This court is now a vast abstract field of pink, yellow, and blue, featuring mirrored figures that symbolize duality and the confluence of differing perspectives. Akacorleone describes it as a metaphor for how different people, teams, or realities can complement one another. Beyond Portugal, he has painted murals in the Netherlands, Hungary, and the UK. Notably, for the Festival Iminente in London, curated by fellow street artist Vhils, he painted the gates of the Old Truman Brewery, bringing his vibrant universe to a prominent East London street art location.

Why Akacorleone Matters in Contemporary Urban Art

Akacorleone’s murals stand out in the global street art scene for their playful yet critical visual language. Notably, while his works explode with joy and color, they also, at the same time, question the speed, excess, and confusion of modern life. By blending graffiti roots with design precision and fine-art experimentation, he effectively reflects today’s hybrid visual culture. Furthermore, his projects—whether it’s a towering building façade, a community basketball court, or a captivating installation—demonstrate how urban art can transform everyday spaces into immersive narratives. For those exploring Lisbon’s vibrant street art or conducting research on contemporary muralists, Akacorleone is undoubtedly a name to remember. Indeed, he turns city walls into vivid, layered stories that linger long after you’ve walked by, leaving a lasting impression.
