In May 2025, during Lisbon Design Week, Hue&Eye Magazine had the opportunity to meet and interview several Portuguese designers whose work is shaping the contemporary creative landscape. Among them, one of the most inspiring encounters was with Terrakota, the artisanal brand created by designer Liliana Silva. Her sculptural vases are vibrant in both form and color. They also reinterpret the enduring heritage of Portuguese ceramics while introducing a bold and confident contemporary voice.
Terrakota: The Artisanal Vision of Liliana Silva
Terrakota’s pieces immediately caught our attention for their tactile presence and expressive silhouettes. Each vase is handcrafted, reflecting Liliana’s intimate connection with ceramic traditions and her talent for transforming them into fresh, modern objects. Using intense, unmistakable color palettes, she pushes the boundaries of classic pottery, elevating it to a sculptural experience.
During the interview with our magazine, Liliana shared insights into her creative journey, her deep roots in Portuguese craftsmanship, and how her homeland inspires each of her works. She also revealed she would love the opportunity to for her creations to be present in Italy. In this country, artisan culture, design excellence, and collectible objects play a significant role. That revelation initiated a collaborative journey.

From Lisbon to Italy: Opening Doors for Terrakota
Our admiration for Liliana’s work grew over time, and so did our desire to help expand her visibility beyond Portugal.
Working as design managers, we contacted Italian galleries and design spaces specializing in author-design and contemporary collectible objects. The response was immediate and enthusiastic. Terrakota’s rich sculptural style resonated deeply with the Italian design community, generating genuine curiosity and interest in hosting her kick-off in the country.

Mia Gallery: Terrakota Finds Its Home in Rome
During our visit to Edit Napoli, a significant event dedicated to independent design, we had the privilege of meeting Emilia Petruccelli, one of the founders of the fair and partner at Mia Gallery (Galleria Mia), one of Rome’s most respected contemporary design galleries.
Emilia was immediately captivated by Terrakota’s aesthetic and artistic identity. Mia Gallery—located in the charming and historic Via di Ripetta—has built a strong reputation for showcasing international author-design, refined craftsmanship, and limited-edition pieces. It was clear from the start that Terrakota’s sculptural vases would perfectly complement the gallery’s vision.
A few weeks later, Terrakota officially debuted in Italy at Mia Gallery. Visitors entering the space immediately notice Liliana’s vases at the entrance, whose colors and shapes instantly create a captivating dialogue with the gallery’s curated environment.
