A woman drawing by Stina Persson

WHO IS STINA PERSSON?

Illustration artist Stina Persson currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden, with her family. She turns her inspiration into drawing everything she is surrounded by, from people to nature, from objects to abstract moods or feelings. Looking at the whole picture rather than details defines her, both as a person and an artist. Stina will never start working by focusing on a specific element. This is what makes her work look so beautifully unfinished.

Stina draws for as long as she can remember. A genuine passion that led her to enroll at the Pratt Institute in New York. But Stina did not stop there. She also studied Fine Art in Perugia, Italy, and later applied to study fashion at the Polimoda in Florence.

Today, Stina Persson has exhibited her work in several shows in New York and Japan, and her list of clients demanding her style is always on the rise. Nike – Reebok – Louis Vuitton – Veuve Clicquot – L’Oreal – O.P.I. – UNIQLO – Bloomingdales – Macy’s – Absolut Vodka – Microsoft – Sony Music – Vogue Japan – Cosmopolitan – Marie Claire, just to mention few.

STYLE AND TECHNIQUE

Her specialty is watercolor and ink, but each of her illustrations implies her fluid style, whether it’s cut paper, abstract art, or handwritten text.

Her style is between mixed media and abstract art. She uses ink, cutouts, or watercolors to express what she thinks best suits her current creative aim. Stina has an excellent ability for liquid and fluid techniques. This brings her workflow to be both vivid and elegant. The combination of melancholy and strength shows the feelings that a person’s glance or a still object may contain. Stina aims at showing the whole thing merged into one frame.

The color palette is well balanced, so dark shades are well mixed with light tones to recreate a finished and unfinished feeling. “I was never good at the intricate stuff, the detailed bits. I’m not one to pencil in tiny dots or fashion an eyebrow first.”

Having grown up in Swedeen in the ‘70s, Stina recalls how toys were simple back then to stimulate kid’s creativity and self-motivation. According to her, this greatly influenced her drawing skills since a kid, when she was drawing girls with elaborate hats and big smiles. Which is pretty much what she keeps doing through the years!

Today she is recognized for her modern illustrations and her ability to give a sharp sparkle and ethereal look to a character, by showing the eyes in a portrait. Stina does this to highlight how a fashion illustration may also carry a real feeling within.
