Luca Boscardin and his Animal Factory

Luca Boscardin, a Playful Take on Contemporary Design

In the landscape of contemporary design—often focused on form and function—there’s a name that brings joy, imagination, and wonder to the forefront: Luca Boscardin. An Italian illustrator and designer based in Amsterdam, Luca Boscardin is the creative force behind Animal Factory. This whimsical and poetic project transforms urban spaces into a playground of sculptural surprises.

Luca Boscardin’s Animal Factory: Steel Creatures on Wheels

Animal Factory is a collection of steel toy sculptures—giraffes, crocodiles, gorillas, elephants—each made from colorful bent tubes and wheels. Minimalist in form yet full of character, they evoke the spirit of a child’s drawing brought to life in three dimensions. These creatures are not just decorative objects—they are mobile, interactive artworks with a strong graphic identity.

Turning Public Space into Playgrounds

The project is more than a visual delight; it’s a mission to transform public spaces into playful and imaginative environments. Installed in parks, courtyards, and urban squares, Boscardin’s animals invite both children and adults to touch, ride, and engage with them. The result is a participatory experience that connects movement, curiosity, and joy across generations.

From Sketch to Object: A Unified Aesthetic

As a skilled illustrator, Boscardin brings a distinct graphic language to his design work. His signature line-based drawing style translates directly into his three-dimensional pieces, creating a cohesive aesthetic that bridges the two disciplines of illustration and product design. The clarity of form and emotional resonance make his creations instantly recognizable and deeply engaging.

Spotlight at EDIT Napoli 2025

From October 10 to 12, 2025, Animal Factory will be at EDIT Napoli, one of the most forward-thinking design fairs in Europe. As part of the EDIT Cult program, Boscardin’s creatures will inhabit a historic urban site in Naples, interacting with both architecture and audience. The installation promises to bring wonder and movement to the heart of the city—true to the project’s playful ethos.

A Design that Sparks the Imagination

Animal Factory is more than sculpture—it’s a reflection on how we experience design. In an age dominated by technology and functionality, Boscardin offers a joyful, analog alternative. His steel animals surprise the viewer, spark wonder, and invite interaction—blurring the lines between art, toy, and urban furniture.

International Recognition and Creative Momentum

Animal Factory debuted in Amsterdam (Open Call NDSM-werf, 2021) and gained recognition at Fuorisalone 2022. Now produced by Magis and Metalco, it continues to expand in scale and impact. The project has been showcased in public parks, museums, and design events. Luca is considered both an art installation and a design statement.

Conclusion: Rediscovering Design Through Play

In a design world that can feel overly serious or self-referential, Luca Boscardin’s Animal Factory reminds us that creativity thrives on simplicity, curiosity, and play. His work invites us to rethink how we move through space, and how objects can do more than serve—they can delight, connect, and inspire.
