LYNN SPOOR

Lynn Spoor (b. 1997) is a young up and coming artist who grew up in Velsen (NL), a small town on the North Sea Canal near Amsterdam.

“It is calming, surrounded by beaches, dunes, beautiful parks, and within a half an hour drive you indulge into the streets of Amsterdam”, she tells us

Lynn, how long have you been working as an artist?

“My exposure to art started at an early age in elementary school. I took a great interest in art history and painting lessons. With time I then became very passionate about masters in the arts, including different styles and mediums of paint. I was inspired by great Dutch artists such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Johannes Vermeer, to name a few. Their influence on me drove my passion and feelings for art.”

Lynn Spoor approached the arts at the age of 12, by drawing portraits of people, in a simple random way. At 15, she already moved on to abstract painting.

“From exact imitation of external reality, I have evolved to create a less representational visual language. Anonymous, sometimes obscured, often mysterious faces express my personal reality filtered through feelings and emotions”.

Lynn aims at exploring the deep mechanisms of her life by creating series of works that enable a vibrant connection between the canvas and the vivid colors she chose, reflecting the state of mind she has while in the process of painting. In her recent works, Lynn will prioritize colors over shapes to follow the desire to disrupt reality.

Can you tell us something about your technique?

“I make colorful abstract paintings with a lot of textures. I like to work on a large-sized canvas, enabling me to have a lot of freedom to express my feelings and inspiration.” She continues: “I use special materials, namely supplies from construction. Like large palette knives from different sizes. They are great to create structures, layers, and deep dimensions.”

And what really drives you to make art?

“Viewers’ reactions to my work inspire me,” she says. “Art is my chosen medium to express emotions, tell a story, or give new insights.”

Lynn’s work is continually evolving as she experiments with colors and mediums to surprise the viewer and engage in new reactions. Her paintings will go further on the canvas, bringing the viewer on board by extracting different feedback and brand-new feelings.

Since primary school, she was fascinated by art history and painting lessons, becoming passionate about the work of Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. “Their influence on me drove my passion and feelings for art.”

As for today, German artist Gerhard Richter is the one who mainly affected Lynn’s work as she explains to us.

What, outside visual arts, inspires Lynn Spoor?

“I get inspiration by many elements and colors which revolve around me, all influenced by my country, my environment, my family, my home, my friends, my clients, and my fans.

Lynn’s studio is based in Ijmuiden, an industrial area at the entrance to the Amsterdam Harbour.

She confirms: “My studio brings the world to my footsteps, carrying opportunities for me to ride, right next to the roughness of the sea and the unpredictability of the waves, together with the warmth of the sand and the whispers of the waters as they break onto its shores.

To Lynn, nature and the beauty of the landscapes she is surrounded by, play a significant role in keeping her imagination turning to the canvas.

“I am inspired by many things in life, the small things.”, she concludes.

A potent source of inspiration lies in learning how people deal and react with her art: “What fascinates me is that people are engaged in all kinds of ways. The message of an artwork is multidimensional”. This is a neverending area of exploration for Lynn.

Lynn aspires at showing her art all over the world and exhibiting at art fairs.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

“The future is timeless and limitless. I see myself as an artist who inspired as many people as possible through art. I wish to inspire and make people happy with my work. To give them depth, reflect on work and life, and open themselves up to look and feel about art.”

Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

“Yes! Many things, but I can’t really say anything about it now, so stay tuned and follow me on my social media.”
